Overview
Behavior Basics is a one-hour online training designed to help early childhood professionals working with pre-school or school age children build a strong foundation for understanding and responding to children’s behavior. Participants will explore what behavior is, recognize when behavior becomes challenging, and learn how behavior serves as a form of communication by its function. Participants will gain practical strategies for fostering positive behavior through strong relationships and supportive classroom environments which are the first two levels Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Pyramid model. These universal practices help prevent challenging behaviors by creating positive, predictable, and engaging learning environments where all children can thrive. A proof of learning as an online exam from the STARS website must be completed with 80% accuracy to receive credit.
Objective
1.3 Encourages children's development of social and emotional skills
1.3 d. Creates an environment and daily schedule that encourages trust and social interaction with other children and adults
4.2 Creates an environment that is predictable, promotes interaction and learning, and is responsive to the needs of all children
4.2 a. Plans, implements, and adapts a supportive learning environment that promotes children’s safety, positive interactions, and behaviors
4.2 j. Uses positive guidance strategies to prevent challenging behavior from occurring and/or reoccurring
4.3 Works to effectively promote social and emotional development and prevent challenging behaviors
4.3 c. Develops clear and developmentally appropriate expectations with children and states them in a positive form (i.e., “walk please” vs. “no running”)
